AI is now calling your restaurant. Is anyone answering?
Last updated 22 October 2026
What happened
In its fall product release, Yelp added a feature that lets a diner tap a button, enter their party size, and have an AI voice agent call the restaurant to ask how long the wait is. The answer comes back to the diner as a text message (TechCrunch, Yelp).
The same release connects Yelp's assistant to OpenTable bookings. On the restaurant side, Yelp's own AI receptionist, Yelp Host, says it has handled over a million calls since it launched in October 2025, and now takes OpenTable reservations and pickup orders (Yelp).
Why it matters
Diners have always phoned before they walk over. What's new is that software is starting to make those calls for them, and software doesn't try again later. If the phone rings out during the Friday rush, the diner just gets "no answer", and the app shows them somewhere else.
So the question for owners is no longer only "do we pick up?" but "do we pick up every time, with a clear answer, in a few seconds?"
Four things to do this week
1. Count your missed calls. Most phone systems and mobile carriers show missed calls by hour. Check last Friday and Saturday evenings. That number is your leak.
2. Write down your three answers. Today's wait, tonight's availability, and whether you take walk-ins. Whoever answers the phone, human or AI, should give the same answer every time.
3. Keep your listings current. Opening hours, booking link and phone number on Google, Yelp and your website should match. AI assistants read these before they call, and often instead of calling.
4. Decide who answers when you can't. A voicemail box at 8 pm on a Saturday is an answer too, just not a good one. Options range from a call-forwarding rule to an AI receptionist that answers, says it's an AI, and books or takes a message.
Where we come in
We build Kinetic Voice, an AI receptionist that answers every call, tells callers it's an AI, and books straight into your diary. It's set up and run for you. You can hear it answer a live call in under a minute, or book a 15-minute call with us.
